Technology allows us to communicate with one another at a whim’s notice. As with most things, there are both positives and negatives associated with privileges. Some negatives to this virtual workplace communication are that messages can be misunderstood, misread or even undervalued. It is important that employees know how to take advantage of this advanced form of communication and use it for productivity in the workplace! Here are 5 easy dos and don'ts for leading your office in an upward spiral towards effectively communicating with one another. Enjoy!
I hope you find these tips helpful and would love to hear from you with questions or comments!
- Always type honestly! Sounds odd to say, but often times emotions run high and truths get stretched through a runaway keyboard! Not letting our fingers run away with us is a great start to effectively communicating with others!
- Don’t assume a co-worker is being rude when you receive a quick, to the point message. Trusting that others are working diligently will allow you to understand their vagueness.
- Avoid hiding behind your screen to communicate your deepest frustrations. Sometimes it is better to professionally and respectfully approach a situation without the use of virtual communication. Talking it out isn't always so bad!
- Being that voice tone is completely absent when sending emails or texts, you may need to go the extra mile to include niceties such as, “Thank you kindly!”, “I appreciate your help!”, "Have a fantastic day!", and so on... This will help communicate your positive virtual voice tone.
- Lastly, we all appreciate being remembered every now and then. Technology gives you an advantage to make others in your office feel valued! Find out who is a veteran and send them a virtual thank you on Veterans Day. Start making a list of co-worker's birthdays and deliver an e-card on their special day. Find out when others joined your team and send a virtual acknowledgement of their dedication to the company. The availability of virtual communication can assist in maintaining positive morale in the office! Use it for your team's benefit!
