Surveys are essential to employee engagement, manager-employee relationships, and business growth. Happy and engaged employees create happy and engaged customers, both of which tend to stick around! It wasn't until the early 1990's that employers starting realizing the need for better employer/employee relationships. In an effort to increase employee productivity and work engagement, business owners turned to psychologists to provide a deeper understanding of job satisfaction and whether or not that was enough to lower employee turnover and disengagement rates. They quickly learned that it wasn't. People wanted more than mere job satisfaction. They wanted to be engaged; thus, the term employee engagement was born. The first time we administered an employee survey at Edwards Electronic Systems, the results were both enlightening and shocking! We didn't realize people felt the way they did, both good and bad. The managers were able to see areas where they were doing great or could improve upon. The field and office staff felt relieved when they had an opportunity to voice their concern, grievances, or praise! Once we started implementing company-wide surveys about 3 years ago, we saw an undoubtedly positive shift in the way individuals communicated. We also where able to see the positive progression from one year to the next via the survey results! Employee surveys are now a crucial part of our company! Yes, creating a beneficial survey that is tailored to your business or organization takes time and can be a daunting task.
